180826 BROUGHT A LINUX MINT OS 2ND HAND 'LAPTOP' FROM OFF eBAY/COST: £40.00+

Tue 180826 BROUGHT A LINUX MINT OS 2ND HAND 'LAPTOP' FROM OFF eBAY/COST: £40.00+.

-----

Yesterday, the postman delivered a 2nd hand Linux Mint 22.3 15.6 inch XFCE 'laptop' computer...4 GB RAM/240 GB SSD...brought very cheaply £40.00 range from off eBay.

Still very much in the process of setting things up. Anyway, everything was included:-

- carefully, well packaged
- carrying pouch case
- the laptop machine itself
- the charger leads
- etc.

Whenever you buy things 2nd hand; then, it's very important to 'test' it all...? eBay demands you leave 'feedback'...stating if you liked the item you brought/or, not...; or, indeed, if you wish to return it.

This 'feedback' report either encourages/or, discourages other buyers in future to use that seller's eBay store. In this particular case, I feel really pleased that everything is working ok.

REASONS WHY I WENT AND BROUGHT IT.

-----

REALLY MISSED NOT BEING ABLE TO USE MY OLD COMPUTER 'LAPTOP', ANYMORE

It's been an awful long LONG time since I ever tried using a 'laptop'...maybe, over 10+ years...since my last Fujitsu 'laptop' stopped working, for some reason, I forgot...?!

And, did I miss not being able to use my old computer 'laptop' anymore. Answer: Most definitely, yes!

I can use the iPad to surf the internet; but, then, I have to keep on constantly 'charging/and, re-charging.

With a 'laptop' computer machine that remains plugged into the mains...; you don't need to worry so much about having to, constantly, 'recharge' endlessly, again and again.

-----

ATTEND COMPUTING EVENTS

This machine, admittedly, comes with 'low' memory...4 GB/240 SSD; but, I didn't buy it to use as being my 'regular' computer...;
instead, it's more for when you 'sign up' to attend offline computing 'events' such as at:-

...then, you may need to bring a 'laptop' along with you...just so you can follow whatever other people there are doing.

-----

TEMPORARY, LEARN 'BASH SHELL SCRIPTING' FROM IN BED

Also, temporarily, one can work from in bed; until when one is the mood to get up and use the Desktop computer, instead.

-----

DOWNLOAD/INSTALL OTHER LINUX OS...TO BOTH 'TRY/TEST'

Otherwise, it might be possible to over-write the OS.../or, use a Virtual Machine...; and, then, practice using other Linux based software.

So far, I've used Linux Mint OS for around a year or two, maybe, three...; but, I'm quite 'unfamiliar' with using the many 'other' Linux OS'es. In particular, I wish to try...

- CentOS
- Fedora
- Kali
- Ubuntu
- Zorin
- etc.

----

GOOD VS BAD

-----

GOOD POINTS

SUPER 'FAST' SSD
Because this machine uses SDD/Solid State Disk Drive technology; that means everything is 'guaranteed' to boot up really fast/as well as, shut down fast, too.

Having this kind of speed advantage is something I absolutely 'love'. Using far 'slower' HDD/Hard Disk Drives...is nothing else but a 'right PAIN...!'

-----

BAD POINTS

RAM SIZE
Frankly, I have to admit that...especially, now-a-days, 4 GB RAM is, quite simply, NOT good enough to surf the internet...as you can only open a 'limited' amount of windows...before the computer either 'slows down'/or else, 'locks up' completely...?!

SSD SIZE
Also, 240 GB SSD is guaranteed to fill up really 'fast'.

BATTERY SEEMS TO RUN DOWN REALLY 'FAST'
The only problem I seem to have detected so far is...once the machine is taken of the mains power lead...; then, the battery doesn't seem to last too very long. In almost next to no time, it went from battery being full/or, 99% full...to saying something like 60%...!

EXTERNAL BACK UP BATTERY
I guess, if I have to use it on the outside...; then, I would have to carry along some form of 'external' back up battery, instead. It so happens that I do own a back up battery charger...just have to remember to bring along a USB to USB leads.
